day 1 - tel aviv - 3 oct

got up and had breakfast, walked out to the mediterranean coast and started walking north up the shoreline. about a mile or so up there was a marina, so i took a walk around to see what the conditions and boats were like. actually saw one catalina. most the boats were pretty beat up. the docks were a maze of dock-lines and power cords as everything was strunnded about. following my wandering around there i stopped and sat on a bench and read. i continued up the beach until it became impassable because of some cliffs, i walked up a path into a park, nature was calling so i thought i'd wander off the path and contribute to the airid soil, (big mistake) i walked down a path and as i looked to the right there was a guy there, so i turned to the left only to come face to face with another guy, so i picked up my pace and didn't look at him as i walked past. my thought as i walked out of the park was that everyone driving by who knew what goes on there was assuming i was one of those guys (mind you this was broad daylight). now i was getting a bit needy, so i went up to the sheraton, but the guard wouldn't let me in if i wanted to use the restroom, instead i had to ask if i could go to the bar for a drink and then suddenly i was free to walk in. at this point in time i figured i'd better come up with some plans, so i went looking for a travel agent to inquire about the possibility of doing some diving, somewhere, well the travel agents were less than helpful. at one they told me that they don't have a good rapor with the egyptian resorts. so i went back to my hotel and looked up sinai divers (dave had been on one of their safaris in the past so i thought i should try to check them out. well they had a last minute deal on a safari that was leaving on the evening of the 5th (it's the now the afternoon of the 3rd mind you) i sent an email inquiry and dana responded quite promptly, but she informed me that i would need an egyptian visa, which usually takes 3 to 5 business days or i could get it by flying into egypt (that was going to be kind of expensive) so i made my way over to the egyptian embassy, only to discover that they were closed and would be open from 10 to 11 because of ramadan. so i figured if it was meant to be i'd get the visa and all the connections i needed to get down to sharm el sheik. since i wasn't going to be able to do anything further on this day, i made my way back down toward the hotel.

walked into a mall looking for an internet connection with no luck, as i left i thought i'd better get some cash. i stopped in at an exchange and they informed me that they didn't exchange travelers check, only post offices and banks do, they directed me to a post office and i made it there just before they closed. from there i went back to the hotel and had fully intended to go out and grab some food, they had evening cake available so i had two pieces and then went up to my room and passed out.
